BIS names deputy head of monetary and economic development
The appointment is for a five-year term.
Beginning 1 September 2023, Gaston Gelos will act as the Deputy Head of the Monetary and Economic Department (MED) and Head of Financial Stability Policy, the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) announced.
Gelos will be coming from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), where he currently is the Assistant Director in the Western Hemisphere Department and Mission Chief for Mexico.

His extensive research focuses on topics such as capital flows, monetary policy, and financial stability. His findings have been widely published in top academic journals.
He holds a PhD from Yale University, a Diplom from Bonn University, and is currently a CEPR Research Fellow.
Following the retirement of Stijn Claessens, who has served as the Deputy Head of MED since 2018, Gelos will take on the position for a five-year contract.
