Bank Islam's junior scheme well received in Sabah, Sarawak
Bank Islam elicited encopuraging response in Sabah and Sarawak for its Al-Awfar Junior savings account for young customers.
"With every RM10 deposited into Al-Awfar Junior, depositors get a reward, while we adopt schools with a lot of depositors," says the bank's East Malaysia regional chief Abdul Malek Abdullah.
Abdul Malek also handed over four huts to the Madrasah Darul Hidayah in Kampung Sungai Imam, Bombalai Each hut costs RM5,000 and will be used by the religious school's 60 students when reciting the Holy Quran, and are part of the bank's corporate social responsibility programme.
The RM20,000 needed to build the huts came from a charity drive during last year's Ramadan fasting month by the bank's Card Centre, which allocated 0.3 per cent of cardmembers' retail spending during the month.
Abdul Malek said to attract student depositors, Bank Islam has opened counters in schools and sponsors the school activities besides visiting religious schools.
The bank participates in every activity of a school in Kuching, Sarawak that it has adopted, he said, adding schools wishing to be adopted may contact the bank's nearest branch although adopted schools are usually near a branch to make things easier.
